Lord of the Rings Online Slot Lawsuit Settled

A five year legal dispute between Warner Bros and the Tolkien estate has finally been resolved. The international media giant and the estate of the famed fantasy author, JRR Tolkien, who had battled over the use of characters from The Lord of the Rings in online slots games, have decided on an out-of-court settlement.

The quarrel first erupted in 2012, when a Tolkien estate attorney was alerted to Microgaming's Lord of the Rings online slot via a promotional email for the game. Soon after, Warner was hit with an $80 million lawsuit from the Tolkien estate and publisher HarperColins. Interestingly, although Warner was sued in 2012, the Microgaming slot - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - was initially launched in 2010. The game had been thrilling online players for two years before the estate was even aware of its existence.

Even though Microgaming had legitimately secured a licensing deal with Warner Bros, the lawsuit that was filed against Warner was done so under the claim that the studio never had the rights to license the use of the film's characters for gambling related gaming. That said, once the lawsuit was filed, Microgaming quickly pulled the game from the market.

Eventually, Warner Bros retaliated and countersued the Tolkien estate. It claimed that the estate had breached the terms of its contract for which the studio suffered dearly, losing untold millions by preventing it from licensing casino titles that would allow it to capitalize on the 2012 release of the first Hobbit film.

Long story short, this resulted in a legal battle that lasted for five years until only now finding resolution out of court.

Although no financial settlement was disclosed regarding the Lord of the Rings online slot dispute, all parties involved are reportedly pleased with the outcome.

"The parties are pleased that they amicably resolved this matter and look forward to working together in the future," a Tolkien estate attorney told the New York Times newspaper.

Will this mean another Lord of the Rings online slot for the future? Only time will tell.
